Axis Communications Unveils ARTPEC-9: A New Era in Network Video SoC Technology

Axis Communications proudly announces the launch of the ARTPEC-9, the 9th generation of its purpose-built system-on-chip (SoC). Designed in-house, ARTPEC-9 refines the advanced capabilities that have defined its predecessors—delivering exceptionally low bitrate, AI-powered analytics, superior imaging, and enhanced cybersecurity.

In a groundbreaking development for network video, ARTPEC-9 introduces support for the AV1 video encoding standard, developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). When paired with Axis Zipstream, this innovation enables significant reductions in storage costs without compromising forensic detail.

“ARTPEC-9, with its industry-first support for AV1, allows for attractive bitrate and extended client compatibility. It’s really a win for the industry,” says Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer at Axis Communications. “The keywords are ‘easy access’ and ‘open,’ which align perfectly with our commitment to innovating for a smarter, safer world. Plus, like all our SoCs, ARTPEC-9 is purpose-built for high-quality network video. And, as always, we retain complete control of the SoC production process.”

Key Features of ARTPEC-9

Enhanced Imaging

ARTPEC-9 advances Axis’s renowned imaging technologies, including Axis Lightfinder and Axis Forensic WDR, integral components of Axis Scene Intelligence. These tools ensure exceptional video clarity and improve analytics performance, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Advanced Cybersecurity

With Axis signed OS and secure boot, ARTPEC-9 strengthens cybersecurity measures. Its in-house design allows Axis to maintain full control of the production process, ensuring a higher level of security and integrity.

Next-Generation AI Analytics

ARTPEC-9 ushers in a new era of advanced AI analytics with enhanced capabilities:

  • Improved detection range for smaller objects.
  • Higher accuracy and earlier triggers for actionable insights.
  • Support for nuanced analytics with recognition of a wider array of object classes for more detailed classification.

Introducing AV1 Video Encoding

Axis sets a new standard with the integration of AV1 video encoding for the surveillance industry. This open video standard delivers:

  • High-quality video with exceptional detail and clarity.
  • Reduced bandwidth and storage needs, thanks to seamless integration with Axis Zipstream.

AV1 is already supported by AXIS Camera Station, and major video management solutions (VMS) like Genetec and Milestone are expected to introduce compatibility soon.

What This Means for Surveillance

ARTPEC-9’s combination of AI-powered analytics, AV1 support, and enhanced image processing ensures high-quality, low-bitrate video that meets both on-premises and cloud surveillance needs. The result is smarter, more efficient, and cost-effective security solutions.

Axis will begin integrating ARTPEC-9 into select network video products starting early 2025.
